The question I am asked the most is, When I schedule my headshot or brand photography session, do I need a makeup artist?
YES! You need a makeup artist for your brand photography session!
Believe me, every woman wants to look her best for her session, and she knows all too well when it comes to her makeup, she might not be the one for the job, even if she’s super skilled with a brush and mascara.
There are plenty of good reasons not to DIY, so I always suggest using a qualified makeup artist.
If you’re going to make an investment in your brand, whether headshots or brand photography, you shouldn’t take a chance that your makeup will be subpar.
Because absolutely no one wants to spend money on a brand or headshot session to look amazing, and then realize after the fact, they should’ve spent the extra money to have their makeup done.
If you need convincing, here are a few reasons you should leave your makeup to the professionals.
YOU NEED TO CONCENTRATE ON RELAXING
It’s a tense time for most people.
Not that there should be a reason to be tense, but most people get quite nervous before their photo sessions. It’s normal. It’s a new experience, and they haven’t yet realized how much fun they’ll have.
The last thing you need to think about before you’re in front of the camera is applying photo quality makeup.
This important task adds a lot of stress, and one more thing to your agenda that you have to get right before you walk out the door.
Skip it — delegate it to the professional.
MAKEUP ARTISTS KNOW HOW TO APPLY MAKEUP FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
Yes, this really is a thing.
Lots of makeup has shimmery properties, which don’t photograph well.
You know, those mineral products we all love? They’re not good on camera. Neither are products with high-shine.
Any product with shimmer will make lines and wrinkles appear more prominent. It’s a highlight shadow thing, and believe me, you want no part of it.
When makeup artists apply makeup for the camera, they’ll use matte makeup in neutral tones the camera will love.
WHAT YOU THINK LOOKS GOOD MAY NOT ACTUALLY BE GOOD
I knew a woman that wore very thick mascara daily that clumped up so much, it like she had spiders on her eyes.
Really awful. It was impossible to hold eye contact.
She was completely unaware of the arachnid legs sweeping across her cheeks, which brings me to this point.
We’re not always the best judge of what looks good on ourselves because we see ourselves through a very different lens than the people who are looking at us.
This is why using a seasoned makeup artist, trained to create a fine esthetic balance with makeup, is always going to work in your favor. You’ll be confident with balanced makeup that looks natural.
MAKEUP ARTISTS CAN CONTOUR YOUR FACE IN THE RIGHT PLACES TO ACCENT AND ENHANCE YOUR BEST FACIAL TRAITS
Most women don’t use contouring often, or even at all.
If you’re not sure where shadows or highlights belong, it’s something you want done by a professional. They know how to sculpt your cheekbones and accent the best attributes of your face with matte contour powder.
They can even disguise problem areas.
Subtle contouring is often used to narrow the nose or face and can make a huge difference for facial features that may be more prominent than you’d like.
MAKEUP ARTISTS USE HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS
Products which have better pigmentation and fewer synthetics. More importantly, they last a lot longer than anything you would get at the drugstore when used with the proper primers and base.
It’s applied in thin layers, which also aids in its long lasting hold.
THEY KNOW WHICH PRODUCTS WILL WORK WITH YOUR SKIN TYPE & COLOR
Let’s face it, sometimes, we don’t get it right. I can say a time or two I’ve had someone tell me my foundation was too pink.
Choosing a palette for your skin tone is best left to someone who knows for certain what will look good on you.
A good makeup artist will know your foundation color should be color matched in natural light. Sometimes this isn’t possible, but viewing in natural light, and then matching to your skin tone, is what’s accurate.
TO CREATE A NATURAL LOOK IF YOU DON’T NORMALLY WEAR MAKEUP
If you’re a woman that barely wears makeup and you know you need a light touch, trust me, today is not the day to experiment.
A makeup artist knows how to work with women who want a natural look.
When my makeup artist works with me, the first question she asks is what type of look I want.
RUDDY SKIN, ACNE, ROSACEA AND BLEMISHES CAN BE DIFFICULT TO RETOUCH
A makeup artist will use special tinted concealers to reduce the red undertones in your skin, reduce blotchiness, and restore a correct skin tone. This makes retouching your brand images or headshots much easier.
YOU WANT TO LOOK LIKE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF
Now is not the time to be overdone or underdone and definitely not the time to be experimenting with that smokey eye you’ve been wanting to try.
A makeup artist can apply makeup in a way that looks very natural or with a little more intensity to give you that extra something, enhancing what’s already there. When you look beautiful you feel beautiful and you radiate confidence. Exactly what you want to feel when you walk into your photo session.
As a headshot and brand photographer, I have worked with lots of women, and I have seen the best and the worst of makeup. The worst was always DIY.
The takeaway here — you need a makeup artist for your headshots or brand photography session. You will look your best, feel your best, reduce stress and feel increased confidence to slay your headshots for a fantastic end result!
